Our area is located southwest of Norman Wells, between the Mackenzie River and the Yukon border, Twitya and Mountain Rivers. The mountains are approximately 3500' to 9000' with terrain ranging from easy climbing, low rolling mountains to rugged peaks that can offer anyone a challenge. We are one of eight outfitters in the NWT and hold the rights to guide non-resident hunters in an area of approximately 9000 square miles. There is no likelihood of coming across any other resident or other non-resident hunter while hunting!
I have been guiding since 1971. This will be our 30th year outfitting in the Mackenzie Mountains. Hunters have to be in fairly good shape; however, we have had a number of hunters from 50-70 years of age who have amazed themselves. I feel it actually depends more on your mental attitude than the physical part. I like to see a hunter book a hunt with the idea of having a good time judging trophy sheep, moose, or caribou. The bonus is taking a ram in the 40" class, or a B+C caribou or moose.
Sheep We have done consistently well each year in taking 3-7 rams over 40". This is one of the few areas left that you could call untouched wilderness. Moose and Caribou We take approximately 10-12 moose a year ranging from 57" to 72" in size, averaging at over a 60" spread. We usually take one or two record book moose per year and on our caribou hunts we take 5 to 8 caribou a year that make it into the record book, out of 30 caribou. Due to the size of our area and shortness of the season, we have found that we have the best results by back-packing using pack dogs. This allows us to get into a whole lot of new country each hunt and not put pressure on horse trails and areas with main camps. The dogs can carry from 30-40 pounds and enable the hunter to just pack mainly his own gear, anywhere from 15-30 pounds.
